Pilgrimage Sites

The proliferation of religious centers and pilgrimage sites were established along the ancient Camino Real. Each of those sanctuaries was dedicated to specific representations of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, where pilgrims visit and make their offerings. Among the most famous sanctuaries are: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Mexico City; El Señor de Chalma in the State of Mexico; Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio in Cerro de la Bufa, Zacatecas; Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán in Tlaxcala; Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos in Jalisco; Santa Catarina in Juquila; Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán in Tlaxcala; Santo Niño de Atocha in Fresnillo, Señor del Monte in Jacotepec, Jalisco; El Señor de la Misericordia in the Village of Encarnación; Señor del Hospital in Salamanca, Guanajuato; Señor de Llanito in Dolores Hidalgo, Michoacan; Señor de Saucito in San Luis Potosí; Señor de las Maravillas in Hidalgo to mention a few ones. In present-day New Mexico, the most important pilgrimage center, El Santuario de Chimayó, close to Santa Fe, is dedicated to Santo Niño de Atocha and Nuestro Señor de Esquípulas.
